Moscow wants report on UN role in probing MH17 crash

Russia’s U.N. ambassador says Ukrainian rebels and the Russian government were blamed for involvement in the crash of a Malaysian Airlines jet in July without any proof as part of “an information war.”

Vitaly Churkin told the U.N. Security Council Friday that the only way a transparent and objective international investigation can be carried out is with the participation of the United Nations.

Churkin, who called for the council meeting, said the preliminary report into the crash released Sept. 9 “is not really informative.” It said the Boeing 777 was likely struck by multiple “high-energy objects from outside the aircraft,” causing its breakup over eastern Ukraine.

He said Russia has new questions stemming from the report and called for the release of alleged information on what happened, including satellite photos.

Jet Airways Pilots Launch Their Own Website for Incident Analysis

Criticizing sections of the media for misreporting on a recent incident involving loss of altitude by a plane, the pilot’s union of Jet Airways today said it is forming a “technical site” to provide the right perspective on civil aviation issues.

The National Aviation Guild (NAG), the Jet pilots’ union, said a 2,900ft drop in altitude by a Jet Airways Boeing 777 last month was erroneously reported as a 5,000ft plunge by the media.

It said while the reasons for the sudden loss of altitude by the flight are still being investigated, the loss of altitude at 800ft per minute “is less than prescribed for a controlled radar environment.”
Stories about the 5,000 ft drop got circulated due to the media’s reliance on a “publicity hungry” official from the civil aviation regulator DGCA, it alleged.

The Captain was having his “controlled rest” and was not breaking any norm, while the first officer was also not playing on her tablet as being reported, adding that the tablets are used as a working tool by all pilots.
“We would request you not to conduct a trial by media. We would request you to follow the principles of natural justice and give a fair chance to the all the pilots,” it appealed to the media.

In order to get the right perspective across on such events, the union said it is sensitive to the difficulties on analysis faced by the media, which generally goes to retired military aviators for the perspective.
Stating that issues in civil aviation are different in nature, it decided to set up a technical site to comment on
happenings in the civil aviation sector.

“We have formed a technical site which consists of type rated examiners of most types of aircraft flown in India and would be able to provide a more authentic version of the events that happen in the civil aviation sector in India,” it said in the statement.

A Jet Airways plane from Mumbai to Brussels, with around 280 passengers on board, had lost altitude over the Turkish airspace in early August.

Terming it a “serious incident”, aviation regulator DGCA had suspended the two pilots and initiated a probe into the incident.

B-777 Wing Flap Found on Farm Near Narita Airport

A wing flap presumed to be from a Boeing 777 airliner, the same type of plane that crashed in San Francisco earlier this month, was found at a farm in the vicinity of Tokyo’s Narita International Airport last week.

Japan’s Jiji Press reports that authorities are investigating but do not know which airline the flap came from. Narita airport has advised all airlines to take special precautions to prevent mechanical parts from falling off their planes, and to report whether they find any planes that have lost a wing flap.

Asiana Airlines B777 Accident, San Francisco – SFO

An Asiana Airlines Boeing 777-200, flight OZ-214 from Seoul – South Korea to San Francisco – USA, with 291 passengers and 16 crew, landed short of runway 28L impacting the sea wall separating the runway 28L from the San Francisco Bay.  The accident occurred at 11:27 local time (18:27UTC).  The tail, gear and engines separated and the aircraft came to a rest left of the runway about 490 meters past the runway threshold. The aircraft burst into flames and partially burned out, 238 occupants were able to evacuate the aircraft in time and are alive, 67 occupants are missing, 2 people are confirmed killed in the accident.

The San Francisco airport was completely closed for about 5 hours, later runway 01L/19R and 01R/19L reopened operations, but runway10/28 remained closed.

An witness on the ground reported that the approach of the aircraft looked normal at first, but prior to impact the aircraft began to descent below the glide path and then impacted the sea wall ahead of the runway.
