Southwest B737, nose gear collapse on landing at La Guardia

A Southwest Airlines Boeing 737-700, performing flight WN345, from Nashville, TN to New York, NY – La Guardia with 143 passengers on board made a hard landing at La Guardia runway 04, the nose gear collapsed and the aircraft came to a rest in a patch of grass.

The aircraft stopped on the right edge of the runway with the nose gear at the edge of the high speed turn off.

Emergency crews responded immediately and began spraying foam on the plane’s nose to prevent fire. The airport was closed for some time but reopened later.

 

Five passengers and three crew members received injuries during the evacuation and were transferred to hospitals in the area.  The aircraft sustained substantial damage.

Officials from the Federal Aviation Administration – FAA and the National Transportation Safety Bureau – NTSB are investigating the incident.
